Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council

Mandated by the Older Americans Act, the AAA Advisory Council is the principal advocacy body for the Elderly and disabled individuals in Los Angeles County.

These dedicated individuals -- the majority of which are 60 plus years of age or a service provider -- meet regularly as a whole or in standing committees to engage in public and media discussions of relevant issues impacting the lives of older adults. Members of the Council serve as the “eyes and ears” of local seniors and their caregivers. Legislation, policies and programs are actively reviewed at all levels of government, with positions taken and communicated as appropriate.. In addition, community education forums and workshops are conducted throughout the County, working in collaboration with the Commission on Aging to maintain a Speaker’s Bureau. Above all, the Council strives to work together with individuals and organizations involved with the senior population, the ultimate goal of which is to have a positive impact.

The following were the accomplishments of the AAA Advisory Council during the year of 2007:

  1. Supported CSS Staff: in requesting additional funds from the Board of Supervisors. The Council attended the Supervisor’s meeting to request additional funds for CSS staff support and nutrition meals for home-bound seniors.
  2. Actively Supported:  several legislation bills including (Prop 1C) – Fair Share Housing.
  3. Needs Assessment Ad Hoc Committee:  – This was a joint project with CSS, City AAA, LACCOA, and other departments that conducted the important senior needs assessment survey.
  4. Speakers Bureau – Outreach:  - Share and disseminate informational packets of available senior services within the AAA to requesting organizations, senior groups, and cities within the County of Los Angeles.
  5. Monitored all Congregate Nutrition Sites:  – Committee assigned to conduct site visits to all senior congregate meal sites.

As the baby boom generation joins the ranks of senior citizens in growing numbers, both LACCOA and the AAA Advisory Council will play an even greater role in addressing the needs of the growing senior population.
